Precious

Some nights are good, some nights are bad.
Some nights bedtime is rushed; teeth aren't brushed, prayers aren't said, the cuddles don't last, the songs aren't sung. We rush because we're tired. We rush because we want peace and quiet, because we don't want to miss the beginning of our favorite show, or, dare I say, we've had enough of parenthood for one day.

Tonight I'm going to say an extra prayer, give an extra hug, cuddle another minute, say I love you a few more times, and sing to his heart's desire. I'll never know, and never care what I'm missing.

Totally unrelated to your post, which, by the way, I can totally relate to myself....

Just wondering if you found any success in your homemade laundry detergent. I'm wondering because I'm getting to the bottom of my bottle and am wanting to try your recipe.

Actually, last week I ran out of dishwasher detergent and the store were all closed that late at night. I googled a homemade recipe, read up on the reviews, and decided to take the plunge and try it. I needed clean dishes NOW...I had the ingredients....if anything I thought it would be a cheap experiment. Well, it has been a huge success!!!! It works WAY BETTER than Cascade. I had made homemade bread that day and had bowls with dried on bread flour which I did NOT rinse off because I wanted to see how well this stuff worked. It got everything off and left NO residue!!

So I was super excited and decided to try a fabric softener recipe that I came across in my research. It too works like a charm!!! It doesn't leave that filmy-residue-soapy feeling that other softeners leave in clothes.

Two out of three is pretty good so far. Just anxious to try the laundry detergent now. But I don't want to make a huge bucket full if it doesn't quite meet the standards.

I gave up Facebook for Lent....:

The detergent is working great. The only problem I have is that no matter how much I mix it, it gets lumpy and ends up a little messy in the detergent compartment in the washer. As far as cleaning power, it works just as well. We have really hard water, and I get a linty-looking residue on our clothes that looks especially bad on dark cotton. I tried a store-bought detergent and have the same problem, so I'm convinced it's not the detergent but the water. SO...I bought some Calgon to soften the water to see if it helps. I have our detergent stored in an old detergent bottle and huge apple juice containers (like the ones from Wal-Mart). Something w/ a narrow spout works best to minimize the gelling at the top, I've found.

FYI: I have been using homemade dw detergent, too, although I did a hybird and mixed half Cascade w/ half homemade. I'm using vinegar as a "jet dry". So far, so good. Baking Soda, Washing Soda, Bleach, and Borax are slowly replacing every cleaning item in our house.

You can email me at mallorykseverson@yahoo.com, too. I just got my BumGenius!!!

That is awesome!! I was just on the cottonbabies website today making a list of the stuff we need to restock on. About 12 of my 24 BGs need to be replaced. Not bad after 3 years and 2 kids.

Where did you find "washing soda"? The only place I'm finding it is online, but I think I'm going to ask one of the local hardware stores to special order for me....maybe they will and save me some shipping.

The dw detergent I use is just borax and baking soda with the vinegar and a couple drops of oil in the rinse. Works like a charm.

Simple things are so satisfying....

Washing soda is tricky, but I actually just saw some at Super One. I would call some grocery stores to see if they have it, Wal-Mart and stores like it I've found don't carry it. For laundry detegent, I found Fels Naptha at Ace Hardware, but I've heard you can use Ivory, too.

Actually, a couple variations of the laundry detergent suggest using your preferred bar soap. One woman said she saves all her bar soap slivers and uses them so they don't go to waste. Good idea. I think I'm going to use the Fels Neptha just because of Hayden's skin stuff. I don't want to risk mixing brands, scents, etc.

I think I read the same forum--about saving old bar soap, and then this woman actually made hand soap. Fels has a pleasant scent to it, I think.

Are you planning on using homemade for your cd's? I read on cottonbabies that borax isn't good for them. I found Purex Free & Clear on sale w/ coupon for $3 (51 washes), which was a recommended detergent for cd's. I bought it to try since the price was comparable to my homemade.

Yeah....the Borax isn't recommended because, though it cleans really well, it tends to wear on them faster. I use the All x2 clear and scent free for the diapers. I seems to be the most effective for us. I too read that Purex works well. Really anything without oils, scents, color boosters, etc works for cds.

Have you tried your BGs yet? "Trying" them on a 2.5 year old probably isn't going to give you the best first time experience since Luke (like Hayden and most 2+ boys) is probably a heavier wetter at this point.
Just remember, wash and rinse them several several times before you actually use them.
Did you get the all-in-ones or the one-size? I was debating on getting the AIO this time around but I'm so used to the one-size that I figured I am just oging to stick to what I know and what I know WORKS. It probably sounds silly but I'm super excited to order again. They have become a part of our daily life and we love using them, but still....the excitement in ordering another round/replacements is like ordering for the first time. Weird.

I got the One Size w/ newborn and regular inserts. I've washed them once b/c the instructions said that's all I had to do for the microfiber kind, it said others like wool or cotton needed to be washed 5-7 times. Do you think I need to give it wash them some more?

I've haven't tried them on Luke, and yes, he is a HEAVY wetter, but my thoughts are more so that he won't keep them on. He cries when I make him wear underwear and I'm not really up for the struggle at the moment.

I was SO SO excited to order and get my diapers, too, so I can relate to the feeling. I wash and folded and pictured my new little baby...aahhh...warm fuzzy feelings :)
